school appeals...
Has anyone done this successfully? Our little girl got her place today at our third choice school. Not happy as she is in top sets for all her subjects, and can't afford to buy or rent near our other two choices. Really quite worried for her.

You live in Darlington and flirt with blokes on the Internet behind her dads back.

I'd say her school is the least of her worries.

Pancho made me say that

Why should it matter what sets she's in, Debs? The schools aren't selecting on ability, are they? I mean I know you would be dead against that. As a good socialist and all that. ;-)

Why are you unhappy if you couldn't afford to buy/rent in the area of choices one and two?

Re: school appeals...
Had to apply for my little boy for September - won't hear back for a while yet. But our local authority have a list in their website if the appeals from previous years and success rates - there has not been one successful appeal in 5 years!

I would say dig out their criteria, and find the reason why you should have been given another school. However be mindful that something as ridiculous as there simply being a lot of siblings of current pupils applying for your first 2 choices could be enough for you to miss out.

Maybe adopt a child that goes to your first choice and play the sibling card?

Good luck

Re: school appeals...
Since when did I say a child with ability shouldn't go to a decent school? Please show me where I have ever said that?
I think that schools in better off areas shouldn't be the only ones worth going to, as that is a sneaky way of having a selective system as it tends to mean parents on good salaries get to send their kids to better state schools.

If your lot hadn't done away with grammar schools, you would have a decent local school to send your child to.

By enlarge grammar schools.Had a similar issue 're class division, we just have a more underhand form if it, sadly my lot (as you call them) we're responsible for that too.

The education standards at public schools is not any better than 'most' grammar schools, despite what you might be led to believe.

All this cobblers about sending kids to this school and not that one.....its a bit OTT.

Kids need to learn about life. teach them that properly, the rest will follow.

Besides, thanks to our wonderful school system with 24 weeks paid holiday a year, its a wonder they remember where school is.

Because you went to one makes me wrong?
Hardly the evidence I'd expect Nurse.

It's done mainly on distance round my way and if you aren't close enough and don't already have siblings there then there isn't much chance of an appeal working.
Sad though it is, the good schools attract people to with families to the immediate area and push the house prices up.

BL you make a good point 're holidays.

Highest paid profession in the country.

I know I know, they have it so tough with all those unruly kids.

Still 24 weeks a year to recover makes it abit easier I guess.

Still back to original point - a school and education is what you make it. NO school is worth moving for. Look at Grange Hill, that moved three times.

Re: school appeals...
My parents never so much as read a book to me, let alone help me with my homework. Theynshowed no interest in my schooling whatsoever. Working class family in the roughest part of the borough. Eleven plus and I was in. Explain the 'class division' weighted in favour of the wealthy in that situation.
